The Leninsky district court of Minsk on Thursday sentenced ex-candidate for Belarusian presidency Nikolai Statkevich to six years in high security prison.
This is the toughest of all sentences earlier passed on former presidential hopefuls within the framework of the criminal case on mass unrest in Minsk on December 19, 2010 after the presidential election.
The same court session sentenced another former candidate, Dmity Uss, to five-and-a-half years in high security prison.
They were accused of organizing mass riots in Minsk, which envisages the maximum penalty of up to 15 years in prison.
